Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is a form of diagnostic radiology that is performed with the aid of a contrast agent under a special piece of equipment that enables the radiologist to visualize the organ or area of concern via real-time x-ray.

It is a type of x-ray that is especially useful in evaluating movement within the body, especially problems involving the digestive tract, kidneys, bladder, chest or uterus. The contrast agent allows the image to be viewed clearly on a television monitor or screen.

Contrast agents (or "contrast media" as they are also known) may be introduced into the body through injection, swallowing, or an enema.

How should I prepare for a Fluoroscopy?

Obtain a Prep kit either from your pharmacy or Drew Medical at least 2 days prior to your exam. Follow the enclosed instructions for the 24-hour prep with one exception: You must have NOTHING BY MOUTH (NPO) 8 hours prior to your exam. This means that you CANNOT EAT OR DRINK anything for the 8 hours before your procedure.

How long will my Fluoroscopy take?

Generally from 30 minutes to one hour, although some studies may take a little longer.
